There is much uncertainty about the origin of the Newfoundland, but all agree that he originated in Newfoundland and that his ancestors were perhaps brought there by fishermen from the European continent. Newfoundlands make excellent rescue dogs and have even been known to tow distressed vessels to safety. The Newfoundland is calm, patient, easygoing, gentle, and a friend to all.
