The Australian Shepherd is an intelligent working dog with strong herding and guarding instincts. There are several opinions regarding the origins of the Australian Shepherd. One belief is that it originated in the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France, and is named because of its relationship with Basque shepherds who came to America from Australia in the 1800's.
