Many authorities believe it more likely that the Rottweiler descended from one of the drover dogs indigenous to ancient Rome. It was these drover dogs that were responsible for driving and guarding herds of cattle as they accompanied Roman troops on long marches. The Rottweiler makes a formidable Guard dog. Though easily trained, it must have a disciplinarian master who can earn its respect and obedience.
