Both the name
and derivation of the Collie are obscure. For
centuries Collies were little known outside of the
Scottish Lowlands, where they guarded the large flocks
of sheep that roamed freely over the heath. One theory
of the name's origin is that it was derived from a
Gaelic word meaning useful. The Collie is affectionate
with children, and its keen sense of belonging makes it
an effective watch-dog. |
